Rocha da Pena Walking Trail – Nature, History & Panoramic Views

Tucked away in the rural Algarve near the village of Salir, the Rocha da Pena Walking Trail offers a peaceful escape into nature. Starting from the village of Rocha da Pena, near the Casa da Pena (interpretation center), the trail climbs a striking limestone escarpment that reaches 479 meters in height, offering expansive views over the surrounding countryside.

This 6.5 km circular route takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, and is moderately challenging. Along the way, you’ll encounter a rich diversity of plant life, rock formations, and even archaeological ruins, such as the Moors' Refuge — remnants of a medieval stone structure.

It’s also a great spot for birdwatching, with chances to see kestrels, owls, and other birds of prey. In spring, the area bursts with wildflowers and orchids.

• Free parking available near the trailhead
• Look for signs at the Casa da Pena building
